How much does homeschooling cost in Australia?
Registering to homeschool in Queensland is free, and neither NSW nor Victoria lists a fee for it. What you spend depends on how you teach: close to nothing with free resources and your own plan, or about $565 or more per child each year for an online school, before paperwork help.
We compared the five main ways Australian families homeschool, using prices the providers publish. Where they don't publish one, we say so.
Work out your year
Online schools charge per child. Add your children and see what each way of homeschooling costs for your family.
Children you're homeschooling
Using a curriculum package as well? Add $89 for MySkoolio. It works with any resources.
For two children, MySkoolio with free resources is $89 a year from launch. An online school with paperwork help is about $1,828 to $2,046.
- Free resources and your own plan$0 + your time

Five ways to homeschool, side by side
Most families mix and match. You might use a maths program, the library for everything else, and an app to keep it all on record.

| Free resources, your own plan | Curriculum package | Online school | Distance education | MySkoolio | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | You choose books, the library and free websites, and write your own plan. | A program that sets out the lessons for you, like My Homeschool or Simply Homeschool. | Online lessons for one year level, like Euka. You still register as a homeschooler. | Your child is enrolled in a school of distance education. Its teachers set and mark the work. | A planner and records app. It plans each child's week and keeps the records as you tick lessons off. |
| One child, a year | $0, plus anything you buy | About $420 to $950 | About $565 to $674, an estimate | Varies by school and how you enrol | $89 from launch |

| Reports and records | You keep them | Varies by program | Standard reports included. Premium reporting $249 a child, or $349 with registration help | The school reports | Kept as you go, with term reports included |
| Teach your own way | Completely | Within the program | One year level at a time | The school sets the work | Completely, with any resources |
| Screens | Your choice | Depends on the program | Lessons are online | Depends on the school | Your choice. The app is for you, not the kids |
| If you stop | Nothing to cancel | Paid by the month, half year or year, depending on the program | Term plans renew every 90 days until you turn renewal off | The school's enrolment rules | Cancel anytime, and download your records on any plan |
| Best for | Confident parents on a tight budget | Families who want lessons ready to go | Families who want school at home | Families who need a school's teachers | Families who teach their own way and want the paperwork handled |

Homeschooling or distance education?
They sound alike, but they're different arrangements with different costs.
Homeschooling
- You're registered with your state as your child's teacher.
- You choose what to teach and how, within what your state asks for.
- You keep the records and send reports when they're due.
- Online schools and curriculum packages sit inside homeschooling.
Distance education
- Your child is enrolled in a school, usually a school of distance education.
- The school's teachers set the work, mark it and report on it.
- There are usually eligibility rules, and fees vary by school.
- You don't register as a homeschooler.
In Queensland, for example, the Brisbane School of Distance Education charges families who choose it a fee that covers curriculum materials and teacher support. Queensland's distance education fees (official page, opens in a new tab)
Questions parents ask
Is it free to register for homeschooling?
In Queensland, yes: the Department of Education says there's no fee to register. Victoria's regulator, the VRQA, lists no fee for home education in its fee schedule, and NSW's registration pages don't mention one. You pay only for the resources and help you choose.
Do I have to buy a curriculum?
No. You need a plan that covers what your state asks for, but you can build it from the library and free resources. Some families buy one program for maths or reading and use free resources for the rest.
Is Euka homeschooling or a school?
Euka's help pages describe its registration service as helping families register as homeschoolers with their state's education department, and you send the application yourself. Euka supplies the lessons and sells registration and premium reporting help as extras. Distance education is different: your child is enrolled in a school.
How can we keep homeschooling costs down?
Use the library and free resources first, buy second-hand, teach subjects like history and science to siblings together, and choose programs and tools priced per family rather than per child.
Can I use MySkoolio with a curriculum I already have?
Yes. MySkoolio plans each child's week around whatever you use and keeps the records as you tick lessons off, so your reports cover everything your children did.
