Registering for home education in Tasmania

In Tasmania, everything rests on your child's program. You write one for each child showing how it meets the 10 Standards, a Registration Officer talks it through with you at a registration visit, and at renewal you look back on the year and plan the next.

Regulator: Office of the Education Registrar. Every requirement links to the official page that says so. Steps marked as our advice are practical tips, not requirements.

The steps, in order

Get ready

  1. Check who needs to be registered

A child who is at least 5 on 1 January must be enrolled at school or home educated by a registered home educator, until they turn 18, finish Year 12 or finish a Certificate III.

  3. Describe how you'll teach

The Pedagogy Standard asks for the learning methods you'll use to meet your aims. There's no right or wrong way to home educate.

Write the program

  1. Write a program for each child

Parts like your research and pedagogy may be similar for each child, but the rest is written for that child's needs.

  2. Use the OER's template, or your own document

The template is a guide only. If you use your own document, make sure it addresses all the Standards.

  3. Address each Standard in your own words

  3. Know what the outcomes mean

Working Towards or Not Meeting a Standard doesn't mean registration won't be approved. The officer may suggest a follow-up visit or support phone call.

Through the year

  1. Keep evidence for each Standard

Dated work samples, photos and short notes, so your renewal summary is easy to write.

Renewal

  1. Summarise the year and plan the next

For a renewal, the OER asks for a Summary of the past year's activities and learning, and a Plan for the coming year, for each Standard.

  2. Evaluate four Standards

For Literacy, Numeracy, Range of Learning Areas and Wellbeing, add an Evaluation of how the program met your child's needs.
